pinging knocking pre-detonation sound?
assuming sound: pinging = knocking = pre-detonation ?????
does anyone have a .wav file of what this sounds like? I have been unsucessful with Google, etc.
i know what the dieseling sound of a car that the timing is wrong and it continues to run for a few seconds after it is turned off. is it similar to that knock?
someone else suggested "the sound of marbles being rattled in a metal coffee can"
i assume it would be most pronounced when the engine is under strain (e.g., accelerating while climbing a hill from a stop)
if u can post a .wav (or the like file) it would be great....[a trick rename the file pinging.jpg on this BBS and tell us to save it and change it to pinging.wav for play on our computer...or PM... Private msg me]
or
describe the sound!!!
Thanks

RE: pinging knocking pre-detonation sound?
The knocking noise you described when a car is dieseling is the exact sound in question. It's the sound of your cylinder walls ringing from the intake charge exploding rather than burning.

i use BP/Amoco 93 octane and of course am not having knocking or pinging.
i was trying to explain it to my wife who is using 93 octane in her Lincoln LS 3.0L V-6 and doesn't like gas prices.

Marbles in a coffee can is a good description. You will notice it when accelerating hard if you are going to have it. Try 89 octane first, then 91, then 93 if needed. It will disappear on higher octane gas.
