Mine just went at 436 RWHP but with lots of abuse. Surprised it lasted that long.Probably about 25000 miles with the blower.I have ordered a TCI from Brenspeed rated to 850 HP

Yes I've read over the years that these automatics are bulletproof and can handle a LOT of torque. I wouldn't worry about the transmission or engine in this car. the base model on the other hand, I met a guy who drove it normal on commute and broke his OHC without overdoing it while doing his daily driving. tranny was fine though.

Your results will vary. Just recently a guy locally blew his tranny with a stock setup. Rare, sure, but it happens.

The 5R55S is "rated" to 550 hp. HOWEVER, there are several significant weak parts that affect its life. Mostly, the 2 servos (intermediate and overdrive) are not designed to stand up to a lot of abuse, and will wear out (and cause bands to wear quickly). TCI makes a nice set of upgraded servo kits for these, as does Level 10.
Also, the input shaft is a little weak with higher-power applications; a hardened input shaft solves that as well.
Good cooling and good fluid are crucial as well.
Lastly and very important is a good tune. There's a lot that goes on during shifts with these trannys, and someone who understands how to properly tune them can mean the difference in one lasting a week vs. years.

Whether you need any upgrades will depend on the power you are putting through it of course.

Here's a couple pics of parts I put in mine, but then again, I'll be putting over 500 to it very soon.

^^

nice.. I plan on taking apart my auto trans this coming semester (Ford Assets program), and adding the level 10 clutch pack and upgraded input shaft..

sure beats a ton of money to get it done. I seen this old timer rebuild a subaru auto trans like it was a simple puzzle lol Amazing what years of experience teaches you!

Transmissions are rated in torque not horsepower.

I'm not finding that part anywhere MBT Meli Tan online, but that's not to say it doesn't exist. I may have to take it in. What do you recommend - transmission shop or dealership???
