Fuel Level Sending Unit

Fuel Level Sending Unit
I'm having and issue with my 2005 GT. 34,000 miles on it. I got a "DTE FLI ERR" message and my fuel gage went from reading 3/4 to E. I've seen a few possible links to the Fuel Level Sending Unit. Anyone had this issue?

Mine's been doing it for a while. Sometimes it works - sometimes it doesn't. I keep track of how many miles I've driven on each tank. I know I can go 270-290ish....so I just watch that if its one of the days the guage is whacky. Someday I'll get around to fixing the issue.............maybe.

You can test the fuel sender if you have a multimeter. This was in the thread I linked, but in case you missed it...
Remove the back seat, then remove the rubber gromit covering the fuel pump on the driver's side. Disconnect the wiring harness and put your multimeter's leads on pins 2 and 4 on the part coming out of the fuel pump. The pin numbers are stamped in the plastic on the back... I think 2 and 4 are the bottom left and top right pins. Put your multimeter in resistance mode, and if your sender is working properly, it should read between 15 ohms when empty and 165 ohms when full. If you don't want to remove the pump (which is a bitch), take a reading with it empty, and watch the readings as a buddy adds fuel. I originally thought my fuel sender was faulty, too, but I did this and proved it was OK.
The very first thing I would do is use a bottle of Lucas fuel system cleaner or Techron. That's a cheap fix if some gunk is binding up your sender arm. Couldn't hurt to do it anyway.

Hey this is probably a stupid question but my fuel gauge doesn't work on my 1990 mustang lx I'm going to replace the sending unit that seems like a good place to start. A mechanic friend of mine said he heard you could get to the sending unit through the back seat on these old fox bodies is this true?
