Default stroker kits, increasing the bore size...

just wondering if anyone has increased their bore or gone with a stroker kit. just looking over my options and pondering if anyone has had experience with them.

the main concern for me with boreing the motor is reducing the strength of the block. i've a kit that will support a bore and stroke to bring the 4.6 up to a 5.2 http://www.seanhylandmotorsport.com/..._engines.shtml

debating on boosting the current motor or taking my time over the next few years building something...

Dont buy that kit. These blocks are not good for overboring the cylinders.
There is not enough meat between the cylinders. You can buy a wide-bore FRRP block if you want to build a bored/stroked 3-valve. That block can support wider cylinder bores.

so my concerns are well founded. thanks for the heads up. i didn't think there'd be enough meat in there. oh well. i'll keep doing research and look into that wide bore block. thanks

In almost all cases you never want to bore a motor for power. It nets very little for what you give up. Stroking on the other hand . . .

We use a 302 stroker with a 2004 cobra block. It's rated at 950 rwhp. Blew head gaskets and twisted pistons on last build (reason for the new build) pushing 25+ lbs boost. Motor had been abused for a while and we think main culprit was the stock intake manifold not distributing gases evenly per cylinder (some rich, some lean and still showing very safe AFR)

i was considering replacing the rotating assembly at some point to increase the strength of the internals for longevity. i intend on a s/c in the near future. but wanted to consider forged internals with the options of stroke or bore.

sounds like stroke is the choice. what else needs to be done to use a stroker kit? is it a "plug and play" or are there other upgrades that need to go along with this?

yes, i'm rather new to doing more than upping the boost on a factory turbo car within safe specs.

ultimately, i want a car that has less of a chance of putting a hole in the block. but i figured if i was going with forged internals, i may as well look into stroker kits as well

If you're going to do a bore, get the big bore sleeves and go all the way.

You can safely bore the cylinders .020 over, but I wouldn't go higher than that.

pretty much any motor can be bored .020" over since that's typical for a rebuild. I don't think there's much power to be gain in going .020" over though, not for the amount of money anyway.
