O.k. Since this thread has changed to 3rd gear servos etc what are the symptoms and should I get this TCI billet one installed. And I would still like my original question answered. LOL

I have over 150 drag strip runs and 65,000 miles on my car and no engine related issues so far. The transmission can handle 10 PSI with a "good" tune and a few bolt on's. The higher you go in boost, the more your A/F ratio becomes important. I recommend a good dyno tune to make sure the A/F is safe and to help firm up the shifts. Kenne Bell did not put any shift firmness in my tune from April 08 and the second time to the track I blew out the third gear servo. The replacement trans got a JDM box tune and I put over 100 drag strip passes on it before I killed it by not letting it shift completely into drive before dropping the hammer. Don't ask. I trust JDM for a box tune.

Edit: I've been told 550 is the limit of both trans and engine in the auto but your mileage may vary. Sorry disclaimer. JDM was running 9.80's on a stock auto with just a converter. I'm sure that's way up there in HP. The tune is the critical part of the auto surviving high boost. This trans is synchronized, meaning two events occur at a time with each gear change ie clutch applies at the same time a band is released. Third gear is the most critical of all of the gear changes due to timing. Make sure your tuner knows how to tune for the 5R55S.

It's not really about the RWHP number. It's more about how much boost you are running and how good your tune is. The recommended maximum PSI for the stock4.6 is 10-12ish, depending on the tune.

I have a Brenspeed custom tune with great air-fuel numbers and great shift firmness on a Dynojet. They are giving me a 10lb tune.I will also get it Dynoed before doing any WOT. Thx.for the answers I feel I will be safe......for a while.lol

For me, even at only 7-8psi, I often wonder how "safe" it is on the tranny going from 1500 rpm to 3k, then WOT.

+1 on the JDM tune. I'm running 11psi and have had three other tunes, including one custom dyno tune. None of them came close to the feel of the JDM box tune. Other tunes had soft shifting and one even shifted into OD at 40mph! Just be sure the tuner knows the 5R55S and be reasonable on the boost.

I am going with a tune from "Chris Rose Tuning" We talked about tuning for the tranny and he says he knows about tuning these trannies. And will set up my tune exactly how I want it . I am feeling safer now. I'll see how this tunes out.lol

Level Ten makes a nice kit for 5R55S. I have their Stage III trans for over three years of racing no problems. Their upgraded trans have a lot of good stuff including an improved pump, billett servos, upgraded solenoids and valve body.

JDM has KILLED several stock trannies while making those numbers from what I understand..

What's your opinion on the TCI rebuild kit.

Though I understand what they are trying to accomplish with making 10 sec runs on the stock tranny, but for us daily driver autos- those tunes just aren't practical with less than ideal conditions...
