Ha ha. So true, he may be wishing he opted for all the speeding tickets at that point.

FWIW, my first car was my parents 86 dodge caravan. I drove it like it was a race car that I had just stolen, can't imagine the trouble I would have gotten myself into if I actually had something with a set of *****. Like many others have said too, insurance may make the decision for you. Can't imagine a brand new GT being "affordable" insurance for a 16 yr old.

My first car when I turned 16 (1995) was a very run down '79 Jeep wagoneer. I eventually saved up enough money to buy an 88 ranger (looooved that truck) and I drove it like it was a formula 1 race car for the first 2 months. Why did I stop driving like a race car? Because physics taught me that it was not one when I almost wrecked it.

If I had a gt at 16 I probally would have got hurt and the GT's back then where no where near 400 hp. Heck I was considered a good kid back then, never got in trouble blah blah blah, but get me on the road and I couldn't help but go fast!

if i had a 400 hp car when i was 16:

a - traffic tickets
b - wrapped around a tree

i wanted a mustang, but my parents wouldnt let me buy one. so i started with a Toyota pickup with a 100,000 miles on it. when i look back, it was a very smart decision.

My first car was a 1969 Firebird 400. Way way too much power for me. I taught swim lessons in order to save up enough money for it. I don't know -but I sort of feel that unless you save up the money for a 2011 you really need a trial by fire car.

It would be VERY irresponsible of your parents to buy you a 400hp car at 16. When you graduate college and have a few years of driving under your belt, I could see it. Just my opinion.

I'm gonna have to say that I think it's a bad idea. Insurance, for one, will probably be insane. I just turned 20 and pay ~$220 a month for my 05 V6 and have a pretty clean record. It was up to $270 a month at one point bc of a ticket. I can honestly say if I had the '11 5.0 as my first, I'd be up to my neck in traffic fines, dead and/or have a totaled car.

Also, since you're young and will probably have lots of other kids in your car, they WILL get it dirty/brake things/spill things, you get the idea. I've been there and back before and it pisses me off and there's nothing you really can do besides not let anyone in it. It might be your pride and joy but not many people will care. It's also somewhat nice to have a beater for your first so that it's not the end of the world if it gets some marks on it.

Just my .02

Get the GT... despite what everyone says, it depends on how much self-control and respect you have. Do a few autocrosses so you can get a feel of what happens when the *** comes out... learn the limits of the car, resist temptation, make good decisions, appreciate how much your parents do for you, and you will be just fine. I got mine 4 years ago when I turned 16. As long as I could go to legal events such as autocross and the strip to go *****-to-the-wall and get my "speed" out, I had no problems on the street. 0 speeding tickets, 0 wrecks, and I don't drive like a douchebag.

Oh and... get a MANUAL!!!1 You will kick yourself later if you don't!

Going through exactly what you are... I have a 2010 GT now, got it last year when I was 17 and I can say the temptation is definitely there. I've driven a BMW 535i and the v8 audi a6 and i drove with caution because they were my parents rides... Even though the 2010 is no 2011 it still has some ***** to it. But now at 18 I'm looking at trading it in on a 2011 GT
