Default What makes 4:10s so fun?

Hey guys, I'm seriously considering getting 4:10s installed soon, but what exactly makes them so "fun." From what I can understand it just makes the car feel like it is accelerating more quickly? Or is acceleration actually faster (ie: noticeable on a dash-hawk 0-60 run)? Also, I have 285 KDW II tires, but the back tires need to be replaced relatively soon, so would traction be an issue with 4:10s? I guess I just don't really understand what 4:10s would actually be doing do the car/the way it runs...

Thanks for any input, and sorry for sounding like a woman

4.10's haul *** and you will definitely need new tires to hook.

4.10s + street tires at the strip=fail; however, for D/D 4.10s and street tires are not an issue. 4.10s make the car accelerate quicker. From what I have read, it's a torque multiplier. It doesn't increase tq number wise but it acts as it does. I have had 4.10s installed for about 1.5 years and I don't regret it all. I drive over 50 miles per day on the hwy at least 5 days per. week.

ditto.. first time at the track w/the Vortech and I nearly went side ways on every single launch.. went from a 13.8 down to a 13.0 the first week, went back and got some mid-high 12s

the 4.10s in the auto are very unforgiving at launch.. it's either all out or nothing lol

I have pulled a couple of sub 2 60' with 4.10s and street tires but I think my avg was around 2.2 to 2.4. Now with drag radials my 60' is in the 1.8 to 2.0 range depending on track condition and temp.

There are two sets of gear ratios which multiply the torque output from the engine before it makes it to the wheels. The first is the transmission, and the second is the differential. Higher numerical gears (4.10s) multiply the engine torque more which supplies more torque to the wheels at certain speeds. The rear end ratio multiplied by the transmission ratio multiplied by the torque at that engine speed gives you the amount of torque at the wheels.

In simple terms, having 4.10s will make your 2nd gear acceleration more like first gear is in your car now. 1st gear in your car after the gears will accelerate very quickly. If you want to see the numbers, the torque multiplication for each gear with 3.31s is 10.39, 6.62, 4.37, 3.31, 2.22. With the 4.10s, it will be 13.69, 8.2, 5.41, 4.1, 2.75.

The higher the number, the more torque multiplication, and the faster your car will accelerate. With the 4.10s, your 2nd gear will accelerate halfway in between first gear and second gear in your car now (8.2 is roughly in between 10.39 and 6.62).

The downside to doing the gears is that you lose top speed in each gear by the same amount of torque multiplication. In other words, if you redline in 1st gear at 44 mph with 3.31s, you will now redline first gear at 35.5 mph. The combination of the added torque, which increases acceleration, and the lower top speed in each gear makes the shift from 1st to 2nd gear much quicker and more exciting. Whether it actually makes your car faster depends on the distance you are running and/or your beginning and ending speeds.

Thanks guys, these are all very helpful. I understand now about the torque multiplying and how it would be easier for the engine to crank, but how does the output in the dyno not show this added torque (or does it? I heard it would not). So does it just make the car *feel* like it has added torque or are these numbers reflected on the dyno? And if more torque IS seen on the dyno, how would just changing the gear ratio with a tuner be sufficient as opposed to entire re-tuning? Just trying to understand it all...

Thanks again
