Default 5.0 tires too narrow?

I picked up a new 2011 5.0 with the 18" wheels. They're 18 x 8 I believe, and have 235 width tires all around. I can get traction in a straight line, but I feel like cornering performance is limited with a tire this narrow. 412 hp just seems to send these puppies into a tail happy scenario around every turn. Would a stickier summer tire do the trick (they come with P zero nero all seasons), or do I need a wider wheel/tire combo? I know people are going to say I should have gone with the brembos/19" wheels...but I don't like taller wheels, I prefer the 18's I just wish they were wider.

It's a function of wheel width. You need to verify the width of the stock 18's. On my '07, my OE 18" wheels were 8.5" wide and most tires were specd at 255 max for an 8.5" wide wheel. I see 245's specd max for 8" wheels but that's only a small sampling of tires.

stickier summer tires should help you immensely. if you desire you can just pick up 18" GT500 wheels which are much wider (9.5 in i think) and possibly lighter. i feel that my 255 wide tires are a bit narrow and i only have 300 hp.....

your probably right with 8 in, you can take off your wheel. it usually shows the measurements on the inside.

from the spec sheet, the standard 18" wheels are 8" wide

Well, if you're not happy with your traction, it would seem that the logical thing to do would be to get better/wider tires. My first mod (done the day after I picked it up) was new 18x9 wheels and a set of sticky 275/35 tires. But even just getting a stickier max performance summer tire on the stock rims will help significantly.

Go with wider stickier tires, you'll notice a huge difference. When I switched from my Blizzaks (255 all around) to the Eagle F1 super cars (285 in the rear, 255 up front) the difference is night and day
