K&N CAI without a Tune? Hurt anything?
Long story so I will try to make it short. I bought my 08 GT and it already had a K&N CAI and a Tune. I don't know what the tune is since I bought it from a dealership. I want to buy the JLT Intake/SCT Tuner package from AM. My father is a Ford tech so we are going to load a stock tune on the car and then installe the new SCT tune from AM. My question is can I run the car with the K&N intake on it if the stock tune is loaded? I do shift work and work a lot of overtime so I may not be able to do everything at once. If I can take the car up to my father to load the stock program and then do the tuner/intake package another day that would be best. Just want to make sure I won't hurt anything by running the K&N with a stock program.

I believe the K&N is a no-tune required CAI. However, quite a few that have no-tune required CAI's report that they throw a CEL for running lean. I'd load the stock tune and run the K&N until you can get the CAI & tune combo. Worst case is you throw a CEL for a short time. Maybe try to get a stock intake until the CAI & tune combo is on-hand. A stand-alone CAI is good for about 4-6 RWHP at best. The combo is good for 20-25 or more RWHP.

I ran a K&N AirCharger w/o a tune for several months without any problems. Eventually, I got an SCT tuner with 3 custom tunes from Brenspeed and had the K&N incorporated in it. I don't think it will hurt your car. K&N says a tune isn't needed.

Thanks for the help guys. Looks like I can stop stressing about it for now. Now I just have to decide where to get the intake/tuner combo. I was thinking of getting it from either Brenspeed or AM. Any suggestions on which is better and why? It looks like AM is out of stock right now so I may not have a choice. Haha.

Granted AM and Brenspeed are among the most popular and are excellent tuners but you may also want to check out VMP and BBR. BBR seems to be one of the most popular email tuners over at S197forum.

I was in your shoes about a year ago when deciding which CAI/Tuner combo to get for my car. I've read a ton of great reviews about Brenspeed and have been following their updates on facebook. I couldn't be happier with my combo from them. Woke the car up beyond my expectations. When it comes time for more performance upgrades, Brenspeed's getting the call.

Just to confirm your question you can run the K&N intake without a tune and no problems. I bought my 06 GT with a K&N and saleen exhaust without a tune and it ran great. I ended up buying a Diablosport Tuner off a member here on the forums and noticed a huge power increase and gas milage increase. I didn't think it would make that much of a difference but a tune does on these cars.
So +1 on K&N without a tune or problems. (Before I got a tune).
