Default What type of engine oil do you use?

My 2006 has about 48,500 miles on her and I've been using 5W-20 like the user manual has recommended. Do any of you use anything different? And is it safe to start using a thicker oil once I hit a certain millage?

I am currently running Motorcraft Synthetic Blend 5W20. I got a pretty good deal on a case of Amsoil 5W20 so that will be next. I have a 2002 Ford F 150 that has 135,000 on it, and I run Motorcraft Synthetic Blend 5W20 in it with no problems at all.

Amsoil Fully Synthetic 5w30 in my 2009 from day one. The factor only uses 5w20 in these cars to improve their gas mileage by a smidge. 5w30 is absolutely fine to use.

I run Amsoil Synthetic 5w-20 currently but I don't like the price that amsoil demands. I'll be running Pennzoil Ultra 5w-20 or Mobil 1 0w-20/30 next time around.

Amsoil 0W20 full syn at 8k-10k mile changes w/Amsoil's Ea filter here but I've read that 5W30 is just fine in these engines. I may go to 5W30 Pennzoil Ultra since: 1) I don't put 8k-10k miles on the Stang within a year anymore (not my DD), 2) using 5W30 would standardize the oil that I use in my other 2 vehicles and 3) I have the Pennzoil Ultra sitting in the garage for the Stang or the SUV, whichever comes first.

I stick to OEM 5W-20 simply because of the VCT on these engines. They utilize oil pressure to adjust the timing . You start messing with the weight of oil you will affect the efficieny of the VCT system.

Cars that don't have this system I generally go to a 10W-30 or 10W-40 (during spring summer fall only of course) to help with the engine wear over time. I have no clue how the VCT system ages over time so I'd rather not guess.

I use Ford's Motorcraft Synthetic Blend 5W20 with a Motorcraft filter. I won't waste my money on "Boutique brands" that cost 3-4 times as much. Buy hey, that's just me.
