Resealing the "gas cap?"

Resealing the "gas cap?"
I'm having a problem where the fake gas cap on the deck lid takes on water when it rains/ when I wash it. Can it be resealed? Or was it even sealed in the first place? It hasn't been an issue really so far, but with the winter coming, I'd hate to see ice freeze behind it and cause more problems. Any insight on this issue would be helpful. Thanks.

You could remove the gas cap altogether, and either replace it with a declid panel or just get some more 3M tape from an autoparts store and reapply it to your trunk. Heres some removal instructions:

some people have also used fishing line to remove it, working it from side to side to get the previous 3M tape off the back while they pull it off.

It has foam tape around the perimeter and drain holes on the bottom
in the form of missing tape.
If you really look, the area behind it is not really a sealed trunk area.
The plastic shroud around the lock area must be removed to be able
to see this. There are drain holes to the outside behind the emblem
area.
There are two holes in the body to accept two 'alignment' pins.
These are indeed not sealed but also need not be.
Now to keep the squirrels out of my airbox.
