2012 5.0, idle rough, smoking from tail pipe????
#12
I thought I was going to say, oh noes! another #8 piston popped! but it wouldn't just go away. once in awhile I get a rough idle, usually when it's cold outside. I don't think there is a sensor to determine if the gas door is open so i dont think it's that. I also dont think leaving that open would cause any issues.
I think the problem was you let a woman drive it
I don't suppose it's been colder than usual around there has it? the exhaust is warm enough to appear white when it's cold and it will run a little rougher till it warms up. I usually notice this in -30 to 20 weather.
I notice you don't mention any engine mods, why not just take it to the dealership to check the code? And verify everything is okay?
if you do have mods use your hand held tuner to pull the code and we can look it up.

I bought the Ford "fuel plug", P/N 8U5Z-9C268-B, and it works great. Fits nice and secure, comes with two keys, and is easy to put on and off. A little extra piece of mind that's well worth the extra 4-5 seconds of fueling time

Call me old-fashioned, but I just wasn't comfortable without having a cap on the gas filler. Any dirt, sand, water, etc. that ends up on that flap is going to end up in the tank when you fill it up. Plus, since the gas door doesn't lock in any way, I wanted a little extra security.

Old fashioned? My buddy has a nice 1967 Mustang and that thing does not have a gas cap that can be locked or secured. You can walk up and pop it open. When I saw the design of the 2011 gas door/cap I thought that is was old fashioned. Though it was a nice throw back to the old Stangs.

With the '67 the back mustang emblem that is just below the trunk latch is the gas cap, all you do to open it is press down on a button on the emblem and it pops open. After that you are straight into the gas tank...

the 11-12's don't have a cap, the nozzle has to be a correct diameter for the flap to open. If it happens again I will take it in. Biggest reason I didn't take it in already was I broke the front ABS sensor installing front springs and struts (don't ask) and according to the ford dealer there is a nation wide backorder on front abs sensors for the new mustangs. I am supposed to check back 2/28/12 to order. Anyway, the ABS and traction control lights are on as a result and I didn't want to take it into the dealer like that.
My wife drives it a majority of the time, I do all the work and she gets to enjoy it...... go figure. (actually its like that all the time drum roll!
