Well I went back to my dealer to look at the oil cap again. Dealer has 2 5.0 GT Mustangs with the track pack option and both have 5-50 marked on their oil caps.

You know, I wonder if Ford has just inadvertently confirmed the theory that they only require 5w-20 for CAFE reasons.

In theory, there will be a very limited amount of 5.0s with the track pack option. So, on those vehicles, it would be inconsequential to Ford's overall mph "average" to have a heavier oil. I can't imagine the track pack has a different engine in it to justify this from a strictly operational standpoint.

Of course, there's also the theory that they simply sent the 2013s out with the wrong oil cap . . .

So, I'm in San Francisco and I went to the Ford.com website and checked out the "Track Package" for the GT. It says it's "Standard Equipment" for the 2013 GT Coupe.

So, do all 2013 GT Coupes come with 5w-50 oil caps and 5w-20 Owner's Manuals? What's really going on?

I also checked Ford.ca, the Canadian site, and they have a "Brembo Brake Racing Package" that has most of what I thought was in the Track package. It has an oil cooler and Boss 302 radiator.

Why don't we start an internet rumor (are there any other kinds any more) that the ones with 5w-50 oil caps have a Boss 302 long block with a regular GT intake manifold. Folks would love that one...

Rumor is... the track pack replaces the gt engine with a boss engine, ford just isnt telling anyone.. or ford ran out of regular 5.0 engines so they are throwing boss engines in there till they make more..
ok discuss

I have a 2013 GT Mustang with the track package. I put a 1000 "break in" miles on it then headed up from Houston to St. Louis for a visit. I went to a local Ford dealer in the St. Louis area today to change the oil at 1800 miles and they said since the oil cap said 5w 50 full synthetic that's all they would put in it but they did not have any in stock. They ordered some so I'll be going tomorrow morning. I was a little confused since the owner’s manual says 5w 20 but my oil cap say 5w 50 so I did some research on the net and discovered A LOT of debate on this 2013 track package issue. On one board I found is that a person’s Ford dealer sent them an addendum to the owner’s manual dated May 1st, 2012 that is an addendum for the 2013 GT with the track package. I've included this addendum below.

Probably has to do with Ford wanting to run a "racing" viscosity oil on anything that's being designed or advertised for "track use". Hence the Boss and Track Pack cars asking for 5-50 oil. I doubt they're putting Boss engines into the track pack 5.0. I think they're simply saying, "you're buying the track pack, run the viscosity you would as if you were really going to track this."

Wouldn't someone like me in hot and humid Houston want something like 10w-30? I just can't wrap my mind around using 5w-20 down here where it gets 100+.

Uodhmustang why would you want a 10w ? That number only relates to cold nothing else. As for the 30 vs 20... there are studies both ways, i live in fort worth and run 5w 30 because i do track mine sometimes .. if the 30 makes you feel better do it but a ford rep explained track use as long periods of time over 5,000 rpm.. and said the drag strip is a walkin the park for this car running 5w20

I get my first free oil change in a few weeks, but I think in going to go with 5-30 like you. Our summers just seem to brutal for 20.
