Maybe I am missing something, but fires are usually caused by damage from road debris or an accident, modifications and then failure from the factory.

It takes alot of spark to start a fire under the hood.

Just a thought.
About a year ago I owned a 2003 acura rsx. I went into work one morning and within about 10 minutes an employee came in and said my car was on fire. Before I could get outside with a fire extinguisher it was too late. I have less than a 5 min ride to work and had no problems on the way, everything was completely stock and had no issues out of the car leading up to it. Sometimes $hit just happens. Fire marshal declared it was an engine wire harness malfunction. Insurance thankfully covered it. And I know how a lot of people want proof so here it is

Amazing factoid so far that these are all outside... Seems very kinda counter intuitive.
good thing though because car fires could have easily burned some houses down

Ok, I had a similar situation with a Dodge Ram. The first thing you need to do, if you haven't already is report the incident to the NHTSA. It will feed your information into a database. In my case with Dodge there were enough complaints (all similar) that ultimately resulted in a recall for the entire series. I was one of the first to have the problem. In my situation it ended up being the main harness going into the fuse box. The harness was not being attached properly at the factory causing an electrical arch which resulted in a fire. I will say this happened to people both driving the vehicle and after it was parked. You can also look through the NHTSA database and see if their are other incidents like yours. Good luck.

For that(and filing one for that matter): http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/complaints

None for fire so far. Of course a score for the manual tran, and a significant portion claiming TCS failed/never kicked-in on the GT500's, but nothing submitted regarding this.

Unless I missed it, he didn't say he didn't have insurance. He said that he intends on trying to make Ford pay for it, and not his insurance company.

We'll see. As far as this being a "Common" occurrence, I don't think so. Sure you can find other similar stories, but you can do the same with most any make car. Things break, electrical systems short out, cars catch fire.
