05 GT Volt Meter

05 GT Volt Meter
My wife has a 2005 GT convertible, and the volt gauge has always sat right about the middle (maybe a little higher). The other day, she was driving it and the volt gauge pegged. I figured the voltage regulator was bad, and told her not to drive it until I looked at it. When I got in the car, I turned the key on with the engine off, and the gauge was pegged. I started it and put a volt meter on it, and it was at 14.6 volts. I figured i needed to replace the gauge, but the next time we drove it, the gauge was reading high, but not pegged. Now it reads normal. Clearly, this is a gauge issue. All of the other gauges work properly. Has anyone else had this experience? What would cause this? Maybe I shouldn't worry about it, since it is back to normal, and even when it was pegged, the actual voltage was not excessive.

Search "stepper motors" in the forum and see what you find. The 05's and early 06's are notorious for stepper motor issues. Fortunately, there are a number of shops that will repair your cluster for reasonable prices.
