How Much Fuel Left?
#3
For a more accurate reading, you could try this: Fill a gas can and keep it with you. Drive around until the light comes on, then track your mileage from that point until it stalls.
Or better yet: don't. It's not a nice thing to do to your fuel pump. The pump needs to stay submerged for proper cooling. A general rule of thumb is to never let it get below ¼ tank. Frankly, you don't want to allow that light to get triggered. At all.

Generally speaking, the fuel light comes on at what the car would calculate as 50 miles to empty... but even at 0 miles to empty, there is still fuel, most peope agree there is at least 1 gallon and maybe 2 gallons left at 0 to empty.
But never let it get that low if you can help it, pretend that 1/4 tank IS empty and fill it up before it gets there.

Exactly. You can burn up the fuel pump if you let the tank run dry so I always hit the gas station as soon as my gauge drops below 1/4, and I never leave it till it's down to 50 miles to empty.

Also - running it that low would suck all the crap out from the bottom of the fuel tank - probably that stuff would be hard on the fuel pump too. I changed my fuel filter at 36K miles and I was surprised how dirty it was. I wouldn't let it get too low either.
