Batterys these days just die after 3-4 years with no warning at all. Newer cars have so much more electrical demand, a slightly low battery cannot operate the car.

I put a volt/ohm gauge on it, only showed about 1.8 volts. No warning, nothing the days before. Installed a new battery and all was well and has been for the last 5k miles or so. FWIW
1.8 volts is a severely discharged lead-acid battery, and is probably junk. a 6-cell lead acid battery (which is what car batteries are) is considered "fully discharged" when its open-circuit voltage is around 11.5 volts. if you draw one down to 1.8 volts, you've heavily sulfated the plates, damaged the battery, and it's pretty much worthless.

I see you ride a Harley. I ride a Yamaha. On the Subaru, with meager knowledge of batteries, I was pretty sure it was toast. I was told it was a dead short, or a dead cell or the like, later on. On the day, I was pretty sure it was toast, but asked the parts guy to do a test just for grins. Their tool said to charge it! Bought a new battery anyway.

Many moons ago I rode a modified '86 FJ1200 Yamaha in California. I had been out with a buddy hot rodding through the mountains with probably two or three stops. On the way back, waved adios to my buddy, got near home, stopped at a gas station to "top off" and the darned bike would not start. Fortunately in California, in the San Jose Bay Area, there is an abundance of parts places, and I had a relative not far away. She picked up a battery for me, I installed, and rode home. Here in the state of North Carolina I would not want to attempt that trick again! I would probably be stranded!

I have a Yamaha too, but it's a little 250 and I rarely ride it.
