Exclamation ***New Exhaust Question***

Well i was told that shorty headers are a waste of time.
I have decided to go with long tube headers, either jba or bbk.
Here is my question, I want to run exhaust all the way out back behind the axel. if i get LTs and run 3 inch piping all the way back to the axel and then do 2 1/2 over the axel and then back to 3 inch with a 3 1/2 inch tip, is that okay for exhaust or should i just get it dumped before the axel so i can stay 3 inches all the way back? thanks guys.

Is this a stock motor? That's too much pipe for a stock motor. You need to maintain a certain amount of backpressure, otherwise your power curve is going to suffer. A 3" midpipe is okay for high boost FI applications, but on a stock motor, I think it's going to fall on it's face.

Totally agree with the last statement. You will actually be doing more damage than help if you go to a 3" exhaust on such a small cubic inch engine. Also think about this as well: Exhaust is best run with as few restrictions as possible in order to achieve that horsepower you're seeking. But! as he said previously, you have to have enough back-pressure also. Doing that 3-2.5-3 idea is just creating one big ridiculous restriction. Check into big company exhausts and see what they use. They have tuned systems that are proven to work. Then if you're budget-minded find a good exhaust shop to bend you a comparable product with free flowing performance mufflers. Everyone here can agree with this.

So if I get LT headers with a 2.5 inch collector, I should just stick with 2.5 inch piping all the way back and then do 3.5 inch tips? I have a stock motor but i plan on doing simple bolt-ons with full exhaust and then getting a tune. right now I have stock headers/manifold with a pypes O/R xpipe and magnaflow catback exhaust. all the piping is 2.5 inches. Can i get the LTs with a 2.5inch collector and hook it up to the x-pipe and call it a day, or should i put cats on with the 2.5 inch exhaust?

I think your first sentence above is the way to go!

+1 what everybody here is saying; don't forget to pick up a new mid pipe to hook up to those LT's, I'd leave your current Magnaflow system in place unless you don't like how it sounds. I thought about doing shorties myself, but there's only a few that are CARB certified and that pretty much almost doubles the cost vs. those without CARB cert.; $600 for 6hp just doesn't make sense, and they're way too involved to be switching out every 2 years to get a smog cert. out here in CA (although sometimes you get lucky and have a friend in the smog business, but that's neither here nor there....).
