On a manual transmission it's usually checked on a level surface with the removal of the fill plug somewhere on the side of the tranny.

Normally there's no need to check it unless you have a leak or just repaired one and are just looking to to top it off.

To check the condition, the best way is drive the car like normal for about 30 minutes then drain some out while still hot. Be sure to check the level and replace any that you removed.

If you don't know the service history of the car,I'd change it.The car is old enough for sure.

Drain and fill, so basically fluid change.

Remove the drain plug on the bottom of the trans and let it do it's thing. To fill, you can (from inside the car) use a funnel with a hose attached or from beneath the car use a hand pump to get fluid in through the fill plug hole (located on the driver side of transmission) but by far the easiest way is to remove the shifter and pour it in through there.

3.2 qts of MercV atf to fill. If math isn't your thing, the "0.2" equals 6 oz. The TR3650 is kinda picky, so try to get as close to that exact measurement as you can. Normally you would fill until fluid begins to run out of the fill plug hole, not on these transmissions though. Overfilling can result in an increase in the inherent "notchy" feeling these transmissions can have when moving from gear to gear.
