Like others have said...attend as many major shows and events as possible. Hit up the dragstrips as well when major events are there and promote the hell out of your car.

I wouldn't necessarily agree with this, at least for non-tech articles. Much of it is right place, right time IMO. There is always media coverage at major events and they are usually looking out for something which will make a good article. There are also lots of freelance photographers working these shows along with other local events. So, the more frequently you attend the better chance you have to get recognized.
Posting "media ready" shots of your car on forums probably won't get you there very quickly.
