88 Mustang GT
#11
Thanks guys, I've been getting some projects done on it the past few months. So here's an update!
One of the first things I did after I got the car was inspect the brakes which were fine except for cracked brake hoses and leaky rear wheel cylinders. While I was checking the brakes I also noticed the rear axle seals were leaking because there was about a 1/4" of up and down movement in the axle shafts. What I found when I pulled the axle shafts was someone had replaced the axle bearings and didn't replace the axle shafts which were severely worn by the old bearings smh. All the other bearings in the diff were still ok.
So new axle shafts and bearings and seals
Then I turned my attention to the brake hoses and wheel cylinders.
All 3 brake hoses
rear brake drum hardware
I discovered that the Mustang already had an aluminum clutch quadrant (looked like a Steeda or BBK double hook) and an adjustable cable, but no firewall adjuster. So I'll get one later on.
I scored a deal on one of the old Kirban Kwik shifters on ebay. They bought it new and never put it in. If you've never shifted one of these it feels like a cross between a Pro-5.0 and a Steeda Tri-ax. It's a nice shifter, it's too bad he doesn't make them for Mustangs anymore. I ran it with the short stick for a while, but I used the bushings it comes with and put the stock stick on for comfort.
Also was able to trade for a 140 mph cluster to replace the 85.
Then my steering rack started leaking pretty bad so I put a new one in along with new hoses.
I wanted to replace the orange moulding stripe with a black one so I bought a roll from vinylstriping.com. The moulding stripe kit from lmr is 44.99 or you can get a 150' roll of 1" 3m scotchcal striping tape for $25 plus shipping so that's what I did. I guess some of the color shades might not be exactly the same as factory but black is black.
