Thanks again for the great advice. It's given me a whole different perspective in choosing my tires.

Thanks. Makes a lot of sense. I'll let you know what I decide. It seems that the options in a 235 tire are few, but there's a lot of options in 245's.

If my wheel was wider, say 10", would the appropriate size for AX also become wider? (It's an academic question for me. I'm staying with the 8.5's.)

It seems a little counter intuitive. I would think a wider tire would equate to more lateral grip. I'm not doubting you. I'm just trying to understand why the thinner tire results in more lateral grip. You may convince me to the 235's.

Thank you for all the great advice on this thread. Another question to the expert:

I have a 2010 GT with 8.5 x 19 rims. 3.73 axle package. I want to try my hand at autocross next year with car. I'll be buying tires next spring when the season starts. I'm not a newby at autox, but clearly not an expert either. Coming back to it after a few year hiatus. I want to run street (summer) tires and stay with the stock rims. With such a setup, would you go with 245/45-19 or 255/40-19, or ...? Thanks for any advice.
