Default will 97 4.6 from T-bird fit 2001 GT ?

I purchased this 1997 T-bird with a good running 4.6 in it and wanted to know what would be required to putting it in my 2001 GT which has a locked up motor?
Thanks.

The Long-Block should swap right in no problem. Take the accessories from the GT and install them onto the T-bird 4.6L to complete the engine. It's actually a pretty easy swap.

However, depending on what caused your GT engine to lock up, I'd swap on the heads, cams, and intake manifold from the GT to the T-bird as well. The '97 T-bird had a NPI engine, while the GT had a PI engine. The PI heads, cams and intake manifold are batter, so if they're still usable, its wise to swap them over.

Good luck with the install. I hope this helped you out a little!

Will the 97 T-bird intake accept the coil on plug coils from the 2001? Or will the 2001 intake fit on the 97 4.6 engine?
Thanks.

You can swap the entire top end of the 2001 PI engine onto the T-bird engine. Which will retain the COP's and give you more power too. It will even slightly raise the compression, which will be good for 10+ rwhp.

Of course, you'll want to take apart the top end of your 2001 GT engine first. Make sure the cylinder heads are still in good shape and weren't damaged when the engine let go.

Thanks for the advice shane, but I really want to leave the heads on the 97 motor, so can I just switch the intake for the COP's? I really do not care about the extra 10hp.
Thanks again.

Yes, you should be able to just change out the intake manifold for the swap.Good luck

I understand you want to leave the heads on the 97 motor to keep things simple. However, you'll be loosing a lot more than 10hp. What I meant earlier was the compression will be higher with the swap, so you'll make 10hp more than another PI engine. However the '97 Engine is a NPI, so you'll be roughly 40+ hp less than before.

To answer your other question, yes you can keep the COP if you swap over the PI intake manifold. That would be your best bet for an easy installation.

96-97 T-bird 4.6L motors only had 205 HP. Way less than the 260 the mustang in 2001 had.

To clarify, most of the HP difference is from the difference in the heads/intake/valve train that is why AM recommended just swapping the block and reusing the valve train from your existing Mustang.
