1967 straight 6 to 289
So I just bought a 1967 mustang project. Shes not running cause she blew the head gasket on the straight 6. So rather than rebuild that engine i want to put in a 289 instead. i have read the forums. everyone has a different opinion on how to go about this. Keep in mind I just laid a pretty penny to get this solid stang.
I just want to know exactly what parts i need to replace in order to get her running and driving. and take care of the non-critical parts later.
This is a 67 coupe with a c-4 trans. so tell me from yalls experience, what do you think is the most economical way of going about this that wont involve cutting corners so to speak. can it be done under $2k?

I'd work backwards, with figuring out if the C4 behind a six is the same as behind a 289.Sometimes with the bigger engines, they have more clutch packs, etc.I'd also figure that even if it is the same,it could use a rebuild when it's pulled from the car.
I know of no easy way to find a good, complete 48 year old 289(let's not forget that you'll need an entire exhaust system and perhaps a properly sized radiator as well).I would probably pursue shaping up the six, just to get her back to being a driver.
I can't see doing a 289 for 2k,unless you stumble across a wrecked,restored Mustang.

I did this to my 67 years ago. Its been awhile and I had a V8 car to take parts from but I think it can be done for less than 2k pretty easily.
C4 trans, 289 motor mounts and the v8 radiator. Your going to want the v8 spindles and brakes also, and a rear end would probably be wise also. You might get away with it if your not looking to modify the 289 very much.
If you keep the springs of the straight 6 in the front it gives a nice stance with the added weight of the 289, but it would probably be safer to replace them eventually to the V8 springs ( I did this, didn't notice much of a difference besides the stance (

You are going to need a different bellhousing for the transmission. There is a considerable amount different in a 6 cylinder trans than a v8. Such as the drums and different things. Also going to need a different toque converter. Just went through this getting a pretty serious c4 built to go behind my stroked 351w in my 67.
You are also goin to need different frame mounts and motor mounts. Different throttle linkage, radiator, and so on

Agreed with all the above^^^^^^^^.
Cheapest way is to get a V8 donor car.
Also, coupes aren't worth keeping in the OEM condition so if you go V8 in the end, don't bother with a slow 289.
If you can manage a budget, a stroked 302 would be ideal...
