mustang II info?
Hello, I'm curious about the mustang II's but I don't know much about them. Do they have rack and pinion steering and disc brakes? Also curious about the 4 and 6 cylinder engines. How do they run and do they have any power? Also how do those engines do on gas? Do they tend to rust in the cowl at all like the earlier models? Any info would be great. Thanks!

RE: mustang II info?
they have rack and pinion, the front ends of the II's are coveted by hot rodders as some of the best steering / suspension setups available for custom cars and upgrading the front ends on pretty much anything they can stuff these under.
from the factory the II's have disc brakes in the front, and drums in the rear. the discs are kinda puny, but large rotor / caliper / pad kits are available for pretty cheap and are a great upgrade.
the 2.3 4cyl and 2.8 6 cyl motors are pretty weak, andi n all honesty the 2.3 can probably be made into a quicker motor easier than the 2.8 - i cant tell you about MPG, but i CAN tell you that the rear end gears ranged from the high 2.xx to 3.43 or maybe even a 3.80
also, i cant speak as to cowl rot, but i can tell you to check under floor pans (obvious) and under the battery tray. also around the wheel wells. all basic stuff really.

Also check the rear bumper bracket/support. My II was perfect everywhere, no rust to be found EXCEPT for that rear bumper metal, it was toast. Luckily I was able to find one on E-bay, had to dig deep for it but I got it.....Also check VERY closely around the gas tank straps, especially on the corners. My tank didn't leak UNTIL I removed the straps to drop the tank - I was removing it to strip and repaint and replace the float/sending unit. Had it repaired and coated the insidewith the RedKoat treatment - PERFECT now. Happy hunting - you'll LOVE it once you have one. Gotta a little juice in mine, with the right set up (hopped up 302 & tranny) it'll FLY! I get late model 5.0's testing me all of the time. Especially when they hear that cam bumping and thumping - LOL! It's a GREAT handling little car, had to add some stiffening to the rear springs to get it to stop wheel hopping on launch. Lakewood traction bars did the trick.

Awesome, thanks for the info guys. I have a '66 now I'm working on. Hopefully will be done around next June, but would like to own one of these some day. I feel like this will be at the top of the list for the next 'stang project.
