Default 1978 Mustang II fuel filter location?

My car has been sitting for about 13 years. We just got it running again but it runs rough and we think the fuel filter is plugged. However we cannot locate it. All the parts shops said it is supposed to be on the body but we are not seeing it.

Anybody know where it is?

Thanks,
Stoneysilence

If its the original or ford replacement carb the fuel filter is screwed to the front of the carb.

So it is similar to the Chevy's that have it inside the Carburetor? Will check that out.

Thanks,

Well my dad and I found it in the carburetor like you said. The weird thing is that all the parts places said the filter we pulled out wasn't what should be in it. We found out the actual filter was for a 1977 Ford Maverick or Grenada V8's.

Far as we know the carb is original so not sure why the different filter... Our mechanic said that Ford was doing a lot of experimenting back in those Mustangs so possible they used an older carb.

Not sure if it helps but the Carb is a Motorcraft 2700. Is that normal for a 78 Mustang 2 with a V8?

The screw in fuel filters for most of the Ford carbs will screw in and work. The problem come in when using a stock air filter housing. Check Advance Auto or anyplace that carries Purolator and get part #F10028. They can cross reference to motorcraft or other makers. Good luck with you project and since its been sitting for a while, change that filter often, they tend to plug quite easily.

That's the thing, the filter doesn't screw in at all. What it looks like is a plastic thimble. Like I said it was listed under the '77 Grenada or Maverick.

This is what we bought:

Look like someone may have changed the carb a some point in time. It should work with no problem but since you may have trash and some rust in the tank I would put a inline filter in somewhere ahead of that one. Do you know if its the original carb?

We have no way to know for sure.

Took it into the mechanic and had a tune up done on it. It is difficult to start cold now which it never used to be. *shrug*

Did he/she change you timing or choke setting? Anything other than putting in a set of plugs and maybe a dizzy cap and rotor? How does it start and run after you have started it the first time?
