Default New to Mustang II's

Hey guys,
I have been interested in a Mustang II for sale in my area and i'm going to look at it. I know nothing about these cars as far as parts, but have many questions! It an 1978 Mustang II with a 302 and 4 speed.

How strong is the Ford 8"?
Any specs on the 302 from 78?
What type of tranny is the 4 speed, and how strong is it?
Am I availible to get parts in Canada (not just online)?
Am I able to swap the 8" for an 8.8?
Am I able to swap the 302 for an H.O 302 (carb'd not E.FI)?
Is their a smog pump or converters originally on the car?

Any comments would help!! Thanks!

my 8" handled around 400 hp without a problem

the 78 302 has like 140 hp or some crazy low number, they were pigs

not sure on the trans, mines an auto

im sure you could swap in an 8.8 but they may all be wider than the 8's in the II

you can swap motors and drop a late model 5.0 into the car, but you'll have to use the flywheel from the original motor and have it rebalanced. the early motors were 28 oz and the later motors were 50 oz.

yes the car has converters from the factory along with whatever other emissions crap they were stuck using. you can eliminate all of that as long as you dont have to do smog testing in your area

Thanks for the info....did you blow your 8" after 400 hp, or did you switch to something else?

i still have it, but i need to do the axle bearings cause they are shot and i'll probably throw a set of gears or a whole better center section in there when i break it down.

the rear is fine. 8.8 is stronger but the 8 is tough. the only thing I have broken is 2 axles from wheel hop. so traction bars are a must with any horsepower. the axles are 28 spline just like the 8.8. I was doing a burnout at the track with slicks when it hooked up it broke one and twisted the other but they did not come out like the 8.8 axles would have. you can use the trans and flywheel from the ho car with a little work. but you might run into header issues depending on the trans.
