Default 74 stang II 302 swap

Hi guys

My questions are rather basic:

1.General brainstorming about putting a 302 and a c4 auto trans into the 1974 mustang ghia II

2.Rear axle, does it handle the 302 and maybe a tuned 302? is the ford 8.8similar in width as the orginal axle?. A good swap idea or?

thats about it for now guys

regards from Iceland
Tomas

Hey,

To swap a 302 into a II you'll need the following parts, all of which are specific to 1975-1978 Mustang II 302/5.0 models only......

Motor mounts (usually only 1 side can be found new, it's weird)
Frame mounts (junkyard or ebay)
Oil pan (junkyard or ebay)
Oil pickup tube (junkyard or ebay)
exhaust manifolds (junkyard or ebay - hedman and hooker both make headers but hedman has a terrible design)
Radiator (still available new)
Fan shroud (junkyard or ebay)
Flexplate (I believe still available new - these are 28 oz. not 50 oz. like the later 5.0's)
Torque converter (junkyard, ebay, or call Edge Racing for a high stall)
Bellhousing (junkyard or ebay)

A transmission crossmember from a dual exhaust model is recommended but not required. Upgraded coil springs in the front are recommended as well, as Ford used a stiffer spring on the V8 cars. PST sells V8 springs and heavy duty V8 springs - I went with the heavy duty V8 springs and have been happy with them.

About the rear ends, if it's an 8" it will hold a stock or mild 302 just fine. I've beaten the crap out of mine with a 400ish HP 302 and now has a 325ish HP 289 in the car and it hasn't exploded yet.

These II's are an absolute BLAST to drive, so if you can find the swap parts you'll be happy you put in the effort when your done.
