why do you guys think ford doesn't offer the GT standard with the 5.4 motor across the board. its not like it would cost the company any more money to make and with the camaro and challenger coming out the HP will have to be upped to keep pace.
also any idea on how 4.6 was setteled on seems to me they could have easily done a 302 or even a 289 for nostalgic sake.

Prolly cause they didn't see a need for it back in 2003ish when that stuff was being layed out. Also bc they didn't want the gt500 to be encroached apoun by the gt, if the only diff is a supercharger and a few other little things...why spend another 25K?
As for why they chose 4.6 I haven't a clue

if you keep the price down and fuel rating somewhat low, you will sell more cars. sure alot of people want a bigger better motor. but Ford was playing smart, and put in the same size motor they have been running since 1996.
ford did the right choice, look how popular the s197 is, and how many they sold. and yes, it would be nice if they had a 5.4 or offered a 5.4.

a standard 5.4 would have made it a bit more pricey, but so what if the camaro and challenger have a better engine, we shouldnt need to worry, my freind got a brand new 6.3 V8 charger in the fall, my 4.0 V6 still kicked his ***! even though we may have a little smaller engines, they were built pretty damn well!

By that logic, why not just put a GT500 end on ever GT? It's all just body panels and wouldn't cost anything different if it was mass produced. There has to be upsell features or else Ford might as well go back to the Model T plan.

I have often wondered why the NA 5.4 is not offered as an upgrade in the GT (i.e. Mach1, etc). I came to the same conclusion as above....lots more money for the GT500.

I think some of you are forgetting that the current 3V 5.4, in NA form, isn't much more capable than the current 4.6. It was designed to be a truck motor, you have to remember. Sure you could do more with it once you start building it, but out of the box it'd be barely more impressive than what the GT has now. And if you went with the 4V 5.4 (like the Shelby), the cost would definitely rise by a few grand. I'll take a brand new motor (like the 5.0 Coyote) over the current 5.4 any day.....smaller, lighter, but with bigger muscles inside.

My observation is that Ford hasn't had pressure to offer the 5.4 liter . Look at all the optional Mustangs offered on the same dealer lots. Roush/Saleen/Steeda/and other's offer upgraded drivetrains. Most work with Ford on technology sharing and the aftermarket is huge for high performance enhancements. The GT was the top offering only during the fox body years (NOT INCLUDING THE SVO MODEL AND '93 COBRA). IMO, i'm thinking the GT will continue to be version that gives Joe Average a V-8 with decent power. Until enthusiast in large numbers give Ford a reason to increase displacement this practice will continue. I hope the 2011-GT comes with the COYOTE 5.0 liter with output comparable to the competition.
