DETROIT (Dow Jones)--Ford Motor Co. (F) plans to cut a shift at a Michigan plant to better align production to demand while reducing the number of days the factory sits idle.
The auto maker will reduce its Flat Rock plant to one shift in July, Ford spokeswoman Marcey Evans said Tuesday. About 900 workers are affected although the majority will be offered jobs at other Ford plants. The company will also offer buyout packages.
The AutoAlliance International Inc. plant, a joint venture with Ford's subsidiary Mazda Motor Corp., produces the Ford Mustang and Mazda6. Evans said the shift reduction will boost productivity. A total of 2,280 workers are employed at the factory.
"It is an unstable operation and we wanted to streamline and improve our efficiency," Evans said. She said the plant produced about 102,000 vehicles last year and is expected to produce more this year.
Evans confirmed that workers were told of the plans Monday. The plant began production in 1987 and is considered to be Flat Rock's largest employer.
Ford has been tweaking production al all of its U.S. plants for the past two years as it looks to wring costs from its operations.

From the sounds of it, they have a better plan than just laying people off. They have other plants with higher production that they can be moved too and some will be offered buy-outs. That, to me, is light years ahead of just getting the ax because production is being cut.
