Did you guys even read the article someone posted?

Some 19 year old kid made his own concept of what the new Camaro would look like. GM had nothing to do with that image.

BTW, to sell 50,000 GTO's would be ridiculously HUGE. Did you know that Ford doesn't even sell 50,000 Mustang GT's a year?

Also, after 06, the GTO is going to get a FULL REDESIGN and will most likely be converted into a 4 door......barf

That camaro looks good, i love the retro look of the new stang and crapmaro if they do make this car using the 19 year old kid's design.

Ford sold about 134,000 Mustang GT's in 2005 (nearly 70% of total mustang sales). This is more GT's than they normally sell, of course, but their well-publicized Mustang sales volume for the new model year 2005 was actually about 15,000 units less than what they sold in 2000. In 2000 they sold about 70 - 80,000 GT's, and about 4,000 Cobras (working from membory here, but I think thats close).

Lots of folks have it in their heads that all Pontiac needs to sell of the GTO is something like 3-4000 units (as if the GTO was their version of an SVT Cobra). This would be fine if the GTO was just a component of a much larger mass produced item (like the Cobra relationship to the overall Mustang line) - its not. For it to stand alone and continue to be shipped from Australia, the economies of scale are much higher. An SVT can sell 4000 units and make money for Ford. A GTO can sell 4000 (it hit about half that the first year) and spell financial ruin for GM. Compared to the V8 sales GM dumped when they discontinued their Firebird and Camaro ponycars, asking their new pony car (a la GTO) to sell something like half the sales that so disappointed them that they quit making the cars seems the lowest goal they can aspire to...

In general terms, the old manufacturing philosophy in Detroit was for a long time that you needed to produce 100,000 of something to make good money - and 50,000 just to break even. When the Firebird/Camaro lines dipped below 100,000 units, they were ultimately canceled. Of course, more enlightened auto managers know that niche markets and modern just-in-time manufacturing techniques can be exploited to sell low volume specialty cars at a tidy profit - it just seems this news was slow to penetrate the brain-trust at GM. We can only hope it is not information that has been misplaced at Ford as well!

You might want to check this out. New info on the possible 5th gen camaro.

http://www.gear6.net/

It's at the bottom of the page. These are pics that GM has been trying to keep off the net, but has finally allowed them.

Happy viewing.

Oops, they moved it.

They speculate you can get the Camaro and the LS1 package for $24,000!!
Honestly, how will GM do that? They're currently producing 24k priced Cobalts. I priced a GTO at 32k+. I would expect an LS1 Camaro to be priced similarly to the GTO.

Those last pictures of the silver concept were photos that have been leaked by someone at GM, who by now has been fired. They were leaked and spread like wildfire on the internet and GM threatened to sue anyone posting the pictures up. Other forums I belong to have pulled the images per GM's request/threats. They are copywrited images.

It has been decided that they will be building the new Camaro on the Zeta platform(or whatever they call it) that was posted earlier.

Projections are that they will debut the new Camaro within a week or so and it won't be available until the 2009 model year.

Rumors of the powerplants available are one engine option is 425 hp, another 450 hp. These are rumors and the actual powerplants have yet to be decided upon. Some people think it will be part of the LSx family. LS2? Can't say for sure.

If you really want to hear what the damage is, this is a post by Scott (Fbodgrandfather) who is a higher up in GM and has been working with the Camaro forever. We are lucky he comes by our site at z28.com.
