Default Mustang could've had a rally version.

It would've been really nice to see the Mustang sliding through dirt and competing in the WRC.

Here's a link to a more in depth article about the Mustang RSX concept.

Wow. Good find. Wonder how popular it would have been?

I think it would've been the go to platform for rally racing compared to the Fiesta and Focus.

1000 more lbs compared to the Fiesta and Focus? How did you come to that conclusion? From the article it said that it was built on a lightweight liftback body with no rear seats. It also looks significantly smaller than the first fox body mustang which is around the same curb weight as the new Fiesta. And compared to today with all of the extra stuff that's stuffed into the cars mainly the electronics I think this car would've been way lighter. As far as the way it looks it's not the prettiest out there but considering the fact that this was 1979 and the design concept back in the day were pretty outrageous, this actually fits in the time period. Don't forget the fact that it could have looked way different today as new models come out.
