The 2015 Ford Mustang EcoBoost Fakes Its Engine Noise
As fuel economy and emissions requirements get stricter, automakers increasingly turn to engine downsizing and turbocharging. There's just one problem: many turbo engines don't sound that great. This means some car companies choose to fake the engine noise, and it looks like the 2015 Ford Mustang EcoBoost is the latest victim of this chicanery.

Piping fake engine noise through the car’s stereo system is absolutely hokey! I was dismayed to read BMW and others do the same. A by-product of the so-called green ‘movement’ I suppose. I’ve got a highly modified, naturally aspirated Corvette track car. Call me old school but when I want to change the way my engine sounds I put my right foot down.

Here's a better article.

Most people want a quiet interior so most car manufacturers have created a sound loop cancellation system that cancels out external sound/noise to make the interior sound quieter, In addition to adding more padding etc. The counter to this is that yes, the sounds you do want end up getting filtered out too. So, they have taken the cancelled out sound and reprogrammed it back in through the same sound system that is cancelling out all of the other sounds...
It's not fake, it's just removed then added back in artificially. The 2011+ mustangs did this with a tube coming off the air intake and piping it into the passenger compartment. This is more mechanical but still does the same type of thing.

the other thing is that for fuel economy reasons, these engines spend more time "Lugging" when you're driving at steady cruise and at lower speeds. Four-cylinders sound terrible when they're being lugged so active noise control will help ease that.
