I remember those days, since I am "ahem" old enough to have lived them. I remember the mags saying the Mustang was going fwd, and the loyalists bombarding Ford with protests. Thank heavens somebody in corporate listened!

Actually, a correction... The planned Gen 4 Mustang was going to be FWD, yes, but not based on the EXP which was itself an Escort. The Gen 4 Mustang was going to be what was later the 1989 Probe (Mazda based). The protests were real and the Mustang was extended from 1989 to 1993 but design work was started on the SN95 Mustang which turned into the now known Gen 4 1994 Mustang.

The Escort went over to a Mazda based platform in 1991 and the spiritual decendant of the EXP lived on with the ZX2 Escort up into the 2000's. The Probe did not last too long althoug it was a good car in its own rite but would have been a disasterous Mustang.

Is the 2015 Mustang truly based on the Fusion? Yes it is but there is not much in there to recognize the Fusion platform. Having a longitudinal powertrain and rear drive it would make for an interesting 4-door..."Torino" anyone? A Fusion with rear drive or a Mustang with AWD sure would be interesting!
