Default Another fatal police chase

Fiery crash leaves suspect dead:

Video here: http://www.clickondetroit.com/video/20381851/index.html

DETROIT -- The driver of a stolen pickup truck who led police on a high-speed chase through several communities died Thursday morning when the chase came to a crashing halt and his vehicle erupted into flames on Detroit's west side.

Sky 4 was over the scene while Taylor police chased the stolen black pickup truck for 10 to 15 minutes around 6:45 a.m., before the truck hit two other vehicles and exploded.

Sky 4 video shows the pickup traveling westbound on Michigan Avenue when it strikes a minivan turning left at the intersection. The pickup sideswipes another vehicle and slams into a utility pole and erupts into a ball of flames.

"I see the truck speeding like crazy," said eyewitness Raed Dharhan. "I let him pass me, he almost hit me and I run behind … and I see the truck hit the light pole and then blow up."

Hose Hernandez, the driver of the vehicle that was hit second, told Local 4 he was struck seconds after pulling out of a restaurant where he had just finished a cup of coffee.

Hernandez's truck was sideswiped and pushed 10 feet into a pole.

"It's hard to think anything at that time. I am just trying to get out of my truck," said Hernandez.

He walked away from the crash with minor cuts and bruises.

"I think this is my lucky day today. That's the way that I see it," Hernandez told Local 4.

The fire briefly spread along the sidewalk in front of a nearby Tel-Way restaurant.

"If it had been three minutes earlier, I would have been right there on the sidewalk and it would have cremated me, too," said Earl Owens, who was sweeping the streets in front of the restaurant.

Three tires could be seen rolling across the seven-lane road as the stolen pickup was immediately engulfed in flames.

Fire and rescue crews extinguished the fire and later covered the pickup with a tarpaulin.

Police have confirmed that the driver of the pickup truck died.

The driver who was hit first suffered minor injuries.

Michigan Avenue is closed between Livernois and Lonyo roads while police investigate and clean up the scene.

Local 4 has learned the driver of the pickup stole the truck in Monroe and the chase began in Taylor when police noticed the vehicle was stolen.

The only shame there is that he hit 2 other vehicles. Other than that, a perfect outcome.

Mind you, the driver of the mini van did turn across in front of the truck when clearly the truck was passing through a green light. What's that, Manslaughter right or is it CarThiefSlaughter?

It would have been a yield on red, and he probably horribly misjudged the speed of the dakota, regardless, the cops are probably thanking that van driver right now for ending the chase and taking care of the suspect. The only part they are pissed about is they didn't get to do it themselves. I also like how the cops are just standing there at the end like "WTF do we do now?" Let's not try and pull him out or anything right? Lol.

Wow that is completely manslaughter by the van. It doesnt matter if he was doing 300 mph he had the right of way. I hope the driver gets charged.

I see both sides.

Van deserves a ticket for failure to yeild.

Van breaking the law PLUS the truck speeding equaled the massive accident. Take away either one of those and the theif would probably still be alive.

I don't think the van driver deserves to be charged with a crime, but they definitely deserve a ticket.

That said, I have no doubt the victim's family will sue the van driver for wrongful death.

Just thank god no police officers or any civilizations were hurt.
Watching video - What was the guy in the van thinking? He saw the truck coming, the trucks light was green. He didn't even try to stop.

You almost wonder now, if there isn't some sort of law that if a vehicle is in a pursuit and something happens, if the other driver isn't at fault. Like you are doing 130mph in your stang coming up to a green light being chased by the coppers, when someone on a flashing red crosses or fails to properly yield and enters the highway and the result is a fatal crash, could they not cite negligence on both and call it a day. The van's defense would have been, "if the truck had of been doing 45, we would not have hit" or something along that line.

Driver needs to be charged.
