Car warranties are longer now and If warming your engine would put additional wear and tear on it, then the manufacturers wouldn't put remote starters on them and they would void your warranty if you put one on... complete baloney IMO.

you'll never over-do idling when it's actually cold out. engine only needs maybe 1-2 min to warm up enough to drive, an auto trans on the other hand... nobody is going to drive around an ice block anyway. warm the car 'till it's comfortable in there folks. don't idle for hours on end, it's not great for your engine. see also: police cars and taxis
