new guy on the block
I am new to the forum as I just recently got a home computer. I am 55 years old and recently retired after 31+ years at Philip Morris USA. My Mustang is an '88 GT with an AOD tranny that I bought new and started racing on the local track when it had 78,000 miles on it. Bone stock it ran 15.45 secs in the 1/4 at 90+ mph on street tires. Soon I bought a set of used wheels and some slicks and would change tires at the track and run time runs on Friday nights. After a year or two, I started racing on Saturday in the footbrake bracket. I put on a chip, subframe connectors, equal length MAC shorties, 2-1/2" cat back exhaust, underdrive pulleys, added 3.73 gears and an Auburn posi and started taking weight off by removing the rear seats, etc. Got down to 13.80 @ 100 mph with an off road H-pipe before I finally took it off the street three years ago. I made over 300 full bore 1/4 mile passes with it and it never left me stranded at the track, not once. In 1999 I won the Quick Ford bracket during the first Fun Ford Weekend at Virginia Motorsports Park in Dinwiddie, VA and pocketed $500! Went 6 rounds to win the final by .005 seconds after my opponent misjudged my front end trying to dump me at the finish. I guess he was upset, but I didn't care! Last year I installed a complete 9" Ford rear from Strange with a spool, 35 spline axles and 4.57 gears and an Extreme AOD with full manual valve body from Art Carr Performance Transmissons. Made it to the semi-finals last summer at the FFW before I redlighted. Last week at the season opening test and tune it ran a best of 13.533 secs with the still stock motor. Not bad for 3,200 lbs and over 108,000 miles on the motor. This week I installed some 90/10 front struts with Eibach drag springs and a Flaming River manual rack and pinion steering system and can't wait until tomorrow to test and tune it again, although the weather forecast doesn't look all that good right now.
I have a technical question, which connection on the coil is the negative post for hooking up a tachometer, the one nearest the fender or the one nearest the motor???? Any help would be appreciated!

RE: new guy on the block
The coil should be marked with a - and + . Most likely out of sight, under the wire? Green tach wire goes to the negative side of the coil. Welcome to the boards. Sounds like you and I did some things in a very similar fashion. I too started racing after the kids left home...then I went nuts.

RE: new guy on the block
believe it or not, there are no markings whatsoever on my coil. I've unplugged the connector and it has no marks, I even took the coil out of the car and there are no marks on it anywhere. there is a smudge of white paint on the connector for the red wire w/blue stripe nearest the engine and that's the one I connected to, so since I moved the ground to the block and that helped a little, I going to re-examine the splice and maybe solder it this time rather than use a crimp connection. I still have the stock in dash tach connected so I can use it until I get the new one working correctly.
since I retired, I can spend a lot more time working on/racing the car without work getting in the way!
Thanks,
Jerry
