My son is 14 & 1/2 and has always shown an interest in older muscle cars. When he talked about his first car, he always talked of wanting a classic muscle car. For over a couple of months, we have looked at 20+ Mustangs from 64 1/2s to 68s. The original plan was to pretty much to totally build a restomod every day driver for him. Goals for the car were to be disc brakes, A/C (we live in Austin) Shoulder Strap Seat belts, full bucket seats. After looking at so many, I started to realize how MUCH time it was going to take to start from a car that has been sitting for years in a yard. As luck would have it, we had driven to San Antonio to look at 4 cars one afternoon and the 4th was a Mustang that had a grainy poor picture and not much details about the car, but it was out of our price range. I had talked to the elderly gentlemen that owned it and he told me a little about it. We decided to stop by and take a look to maybe get some ideas. Much to my surprise, we took a look at the car and there was little to NO rust at all anywhere, floor pans, quarter panels front and rear, the car had an immaculate interior with a perfect bench seat, wood grain wheel and no rips tears or anything in the interior. The car has a working cold blowing AC, power steering and front disc brakes. The engine is decked out with edelbrock chrome, MSD ignition system, coil, wires. I was told it has a mild cam. Edelbrock headers and dual exhaust, brand new gas tank as well. To my surprise, it only has a stock intake with a 2bl carb though. It cranks instantly and purrs like a cat. The car basically only needs an exterior paint job and interior carpet that matches the interior.
We left that night and my son was in love with the car. My son was begging me to buy it but my deal with my wife was we would only spend 6k on his car because that is what we did for his older sisters first car. The owner was asking over 8 for the car and I did not want to insult him, but I none the less called him the next morning and told him that if he didnt end up selling the car and got in a bind for the money, we could only offer 6k and my son would pull 500 out of his savings. The man got a kick out of seeing my son start the car and sit in it and even at one point looked over at me while my son was grinning like a possum with braces and said "son, your in trouble"
In his gruff voice, he told me: "I'll tell ya what. You bring me 65 hundred dollar bills and come pick this car up for your son. I want him to have it."
The next afternoon, my wife took my son and I back to San Antonio and we drove her home. It drives awesome and will be a pretty easy project for us. My son of course wants to pimp it out a bit, so we have ordered some body parts (side scoops, hood w/scoop, front valance etc) to add while we are prepping the body for paint. This is not going to be a restoration, but somewhat of a restomod.
I do have some questions that I will be asking in the forums, because I would like to change the intake and go to a 4bl carb for starters. The quandry we have is now really with the front bench seat. This seat is AWESOME and in perfect shape. my only concern is the height of the back rest and safety of such a low back seat. It looks so cool though as it is. I will post some pics tomorrow as I now only have this one grainy interior pic from the original listing:
