Advice on a '13 5.0 Premium
Folks, I just joined this forum and need some advice. 2 years ago I purchased my first new car - 2013 VW GTI. It's still immaculate and very fun, but over time I am finding myself missing the feel and sound of a V8.
I've been driving for 18 years and have owned 5 Mustangs. Two 1987 5.0 notchbacks, a 1989 4-banger (first car), an 85 GT and a 97 triple black 4.6 GT.
Over the last few months I've been looking for a 13 or 14 GT. I found this one here http://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/de...3935/overview/
I went and looked it over. I'm a body tech so everything seemed fine. It's a premium and a manual. I wont buy automatic. I already got it down to $23,900. No scratches, dings, etc. Previous owner was a firefighter. I saw his name on the service records and I should have jotted it down to contact him but I didn't think to.
It was JUST traded so there is no carfax yet. And when I went on carfax it said there are 14 reports on the car. In the glove box I found the original window sticker for $37,500! I also found a receipt for new tires from this passed summer, oil changes and a few small warranty jobs that aren't worth mentioning. The car seems completely stock besides some flowmaster mufflers.
I walked away from the deal because I got quoted at $12K trade in on my GTI. I told the salesman that wasn't even funny and drove off the lot. 5 minutes after leaving he said he wrote down my car had 120,000 miles instead of 20,000 miles. Then he asked what I wanted as a final deal. I told him $23,000 out the door for the GT and I wanted $17K trade for my GTI. He then came back at $23,900 for the GT and $17K for my GTI. But I have to pay taxes and fees on my trade. Does that sound right? He said with a trade that's how it goes and I don't pay tax on the car I'm purchasing. IDK....
Anyways, any insight would be helpful. He texted me today while he was off work and asked how far away from a deal we are. I told him I need either $1000 more for my trade or $1000 more off the GT.
What do you guys think?

First off, $23,900 is not a bad price at all for that car. I just traded a base '13 5.0 in on a new '15 GT, and that dealer has my old GT list at $26,988, with 17,700 miles. Second, I always look at the final, out the door number. I always have a set price in mind that I feel comfortable with and don't want to go over. They can offer me $100 for my trade, for all I care, as long as the OTD price is where I want it. I used to be a car salesman. It's called "fluffing" the numbers. They manipulate the numbers to make the deal look good. That's why the OTD price is the most important number to worry about.

In AZ for example, Private auto sale transactions do not have to pay any taxes. Also, when you trade in a car, the amount of the trade-in is taken off the total number of the new car BEFORE taxes are applied.
I know different state, like California, make you pay taxes on the price of the car before trade-in.
In other states, even if you do a private sale, the purchaser has to pay taxes on their purchase when they file their income taxes.
As for the rest of it. What's the OTD price? Rather than haggling all the little details which can easily be manipulated to make you think you're getting a deal by distracting your focus, the OTD price is the bottom line. No BS left, just a number.
All the other crap is meant to divide your attention and conquer your wallet.

Yeah, that number doesn't jive with the 23.9 for the mustang and 17 on your trade-in. That would be 9.9. Even with taxes (about 4K), license and documents, etc OTD shouldn't be more than 15K OTD. I'd grind them some more and get them closer to 15K with your trade-in.

I owe 11.3 on the GTI.

And the numbers you wrote here didn't make any sense. What's the 9.9? And where did you get 15k from?
