In search of a special '66 Mustang
I'm here because I have a rather odd question for you folks on the forums. My mom grew up in a suburb of Chicago, and my grandfather bought a '66 Mustang in either 1966 or 1967. It was an orangish-red color as my mother describes it, but she doesn't recall whether it came from a dealer or private sale. She also thinks he bought it used, but isn't sure of that either.
Here's my question: with the vast network of Ford owners out there, can anyone tell me if there's a way I can search for a car's owner by name? I'm in the beginning stages of tracking down paperwork but I doubt I'll find anything with the VIN number in it. Therefore, I'd need to see if there are old dealer or insurance records that could lead me where I need to go.
The car was special to my mom, as she was just a teenager when he bought it. She always spoke fondly of it, and remembers going out on the weekends in it. She's getting into her golden years now, and I thought it would be a nice present to see if the old car is still alive. I have high hopes but little expectation that it survived all these years. My grandfather passed away in December and it would be special for her just to hear the car is alive and well still.
Any help you guys can offer would be great!
Regards,
Jeremy

It's hard to determine exactly. Especially on older cars. I'd start with the DMV you used to be able to retrieve registration records not sure now with all the privacy laws. That should have a VIN number on it. If not check for an insurance carrier name if listed. If they are still in business they will have the VIN. Once you obtain that it's kind of hit or miss you can go back to the DMV and check to see its current registration status.

Thank you guys for the input! I'm told he used the same insurance carrier since the sixties, so that would be a good place to start. He sold the car around 1973 so it's unlikely they will still have the information on it. But it's worth a shot. The DMV is a good route as well. I have a friend that works for Ford in MI that is going to see what he can find.
