when i was 16 or 17, my dad and i were headed to virginia to race, and on a 2 lane highway in WV we came upon an accident where a semi had slammed into a chevette which had tried to cross the highway in front of the speeding semi. the semi swerved but still hit the car right in front of the passenger door. it was very late at night, and my dad and i were the first people to come upon the accident...i ran up to the car, and there was what was left of two people. the passenger, who appeared to have been laying down, looked like she was tangled in the wreckage, so i looked into trying to get her out by pulling away at part of the dash, and i realized that from the upper thigh down, was gone. when the corner of the truck hit the car it bent the car in half so quickly that it cut her legs off...she was a real mess, obviously...blood coming out of her ears and mouth...not moving so much as she was twitching, and then it stopped...so i ran around to the other side, and we pried the door open, hoping to be able to free the driver. when the car bent in half, the steering column had broken or become dislodged, and had her pinned by the chin to the seat, through her chest. she was still very much alive, and was trying to reach to the passenger, and kept rubbing the other womans head. the driver was crying i think, or making a noise that sounded like crying, gasping blood. another guy showed up, and he was a volunteer fireman, and he called into the police (we didnt have a cell phone in 1994-5). the fireman kept telling her that "it was going to be ok", and telling her that her friend was fine...i was thinking "fine, that girl is cut in half"...although we didnt have the right tools, we tried to free the driver, just by bending things out of the way, but before we were able to move the damaged steering column enough to free her, she died. the police showed up about a half hour later, as did the EMTs. they told us that the damage to the drivers chest was so severe, that even had we gotten her out, she would have died. we told them that the passenger was still alive when we got there, but they told us not to annonce that (as the townies had shown up by now..flashing lights + sirens = rednecks).
They had to cut the front of the car off, and the roof, to get the girls out. it turns out that the passenger was pregnant, and she had gone into labor...that was why they ran the red light across the highway...they were on the way to the hospital. once the semi driver came to, he had a breakdown of sorts from seeing "what he did".
the look of the girls made my dad sick...and the fireman had to cover his nose and mouth because he couldnt stand the smell...
Thats quite possibly one of the most disturbing things that you could come across. That image must be pretty vivid to this day and likely be something that you will never, ever forget.
honestly, it REALLY bothered my dad...but i wasnt so affected by it...i actually have a hard time recalling exactly what it looked like...i think that my mind has kind of blocked parts of it out...there are images of it, but i was trying not to really stare at the carnage while trying to get them out of the car...if anything, im more bothered that we couldnt do more for them.

Wow this thread took a turn...from gross to almost having tears in my eyes. Those poor people. This is why you call an ambulance to take you to the hospital if you are in labor. Better safe then sorry....sorry was the case here.

while you are right, we were basically in the middle of no where...it was just this little town stuck along the highway...it was some houses, some trailers, and a few small stores...most of which wer gas stations. i was also pretty pissed off about the fact that from the time that the guy called the police, to when they got there, it was over a half hour. however, we saw plenty of them running gun along the highway on the way there...

+1 If you think its so important that you get need to get there that fast, you should call an ambulance. Most people get very anxious when driving family/friends/etc. to hospital and lose focus on driving.
I've had similar experience myself. My vol. fire dept was called out to a wreck involving a small car and a chevy dually. I was about 1/2 mile from the call, so i got there first. The car was destroyed, I couldnt even tell what it was until police ran the license plate and found out. When I got to her she was still awake and talking, she was confused but not enough that she didnt know what was going on. The whole dash was on top of her chest, I couldnt tell what condition her lower half was in. All I could do was talk to her, and I could see she was getting worse. Just before she died she asked me to tell her family that she loved them. I still dont know what was harder, watching her die and not being able to to a damn thing about it, or having to tell her family what she said before she died.[>:]
