Default Any bikers on here? Mountain bikers that is!

I am thinking about getting a new mountain bike and want some opions. I have a price range in the $300.00 area, and have found a couple of bikes that might fit the bill. The first one is the Schwinn Mesa GS with 8 speeds and a 15" frame, the other is a Mongoose Vanish with 21 speeds and unknow frame size at this time. I need a smaller frame as I was not blessed with height and my current 19.5" frame is too big! I ride approx. 25-30 miles a week and it will see both pavement and dirt, with alittle abuse coming its way. If anyone has any experience either good or bad with these please let me know or if you have any other suggestions I will be more then open to hear them as well! Thanks

I got my Gary Fisher Advance for around $300 and it's a great bike.

the mongoose is the better of the two. i had a mongoose for a while and it saw some really hard abuse. id still have it now if it wasnt for the gear alignment going bad and the little thing that hangs off the sprocket cluster (moves the chain when you shift) got all out of wake and caught itselt in my spokes and that was the end of that frame. i actually destroyed a $2000 down hill haro one time...it was a rental when i was in west virginia on vacation. i guess i took it where bikes shouldnt go. bent both rims chipped some teeth off the sprockets blew out both tires too. and i blew out the front shocks

I would say go with the mongoose, mine has treated me extremely well so far and I have beat the hell out of it. But the only thing I have a problem with is the rear shock. I have never seen a use for one unless you are doing down hill riding overwise I feel its a waste of money and it feels like you are wasting so much energy on uphills with it.

This bike costs just a little bit more, but its the most solid bike of the low end ones.

dude........you don't want either if your a serious mountain biker. for the price range,, the best bike you can get is the specialized hardrock. or, the Giant Boulder SE

Boostin, i assume you posted a link to the hardrock?

don't get a walmart bike. i've seen them fall apart. i worked in a bike shop and had to repair these disasters.
