There are many different types of whisky... My favorite? Scotch whiskey... or just Scotch as it is commonly refered to! Single malt though.. only single malt.. alot of people go all googly over Johny Walker and the blue label, gold label, whatever friken label... either way it is still a BLENDED scotch whiskey! Meaning they take the old aged good stuff... and mix it with some new stuff... single malt is scotch whiskey from a single barrel, not blended.
A good scotch should be drank by itself, no ice.. NO MIXER.. slightly chilled if you prefer... myself I drink it on the rocks.. Glenlivet, Glenfiddich, Oban, McCallan, etc.
Then you got Bourbon, Jim Beam, Makers Mark, Knob Creek, etc. The finer bourbons like Makers Mark you want to drink by itself or on the rocks, Jim Beam can be drank with mixers, IE: Coke, soda, sweet and sour, etc.
Jack Daniels? Jack Daniels is a Tennesy Sour Mash whisky... good stuff! Drink it with coke, sprite, sweet n sour, etc.
I recomend a Jack night! Jack and coke as the drink... and Jackhammers as the shot!
Whats a Jackhammer?? Jack and Redbull!!! GOOD STUFF! You can also just make it a drink, just as good!
lots of whiskey varietys out there.. Crown Royal, Seagrams 7, Wild Turkey,
Crown Royal on the rocks. That is the drink to have in my opnion. If you must mix brown liquor, do Jack and Coke. It's easy, cheap and actually taste pretty good.
Another option is a Whiskey Sour. Take some Brown Liquor, I use Jack, and put it on the rocks. Then add just a bit of the sour mix to take the edge off. Works real well on the 100 proof stuff.

Good advice, but I'm not as much of a Scotch snob. I like some of the blends......Johnnie Walker Black, Chivas, Pinch. Yes, I prefer a good single malt and usually drink them. My faves are Lagavulin, Tallisker, and Glenmorangie sherry or port cask. I prefer a smoky taste. I went to Scotland in Jan. and got hooked on the way they drink it......no ice with a splash of water to bring out the taste. The bad thing is that I can't afford to drink the premium Scotches all the time and often end up with either Grant's or Famous Grouse. I toured the Famous Grouse and Royal Lochnagar distillery and it was a hoot. Royal Lochnagar is a very light hand made single malt that was the first licensed by the Queen and is excellent if you can find it.
