This one just stopped me in my track…….had to pass along.
DON'T TEXT WHILE DRIVING!!!!!.....
Just stop and think about the times you are distracted...
Dear Friends,
Thanks once again for your continuing words of love and offers of support. It's in times of crisis like this that we are especially aware how fortunate we are to have so many wonderful friends in our lives.
I am happy to report that our sweet little Griffin continues to improve steadily and is going home today! There are some photos of him in the hospital at the bottom of this email. They're distressing, but we think it's important for all to see the very real human consequences that can result from driving while 'InTEXTicated'.
This is the site where the accident occurred. Note that this is a wide open highway with unlimited visibility. The kids were headed toward us; the 'X' shows where they stopped; and the arrow shows the side road onto which they intended to turn after oncoming traffic had passed. The skid marks were made by Mason's locked brakes as they were catapulted into oncoming traffic only to be struck again on their rear right side
It's important to state that Mason had slowed down gradually, then stopped. They'd already been totally stopped long enough for two following cars to go around them on the right shoulder, but the 18-year-old girl driving the third vehicle never slowedand plowed directly into their rear going 70mph. She apparently never even saw them.
You can see that she hit them dead-center with no attempt to slow or evade the collision.
She hit dead-center on her 2008 Yukon SUV as well. She escaped unscathed.
As you can imagine, our family is furious. There were no extenuating circumstances for this accident. There was no blowout, no wet road, no curve or hill or fog to limit visibility. This girl clearly should have been able to see the traffic conditions at least a half mile ahead had she been looking, but she did not even slow down!
What could possibly have distracted an 18-year-old college girl from watching the road for so long a time? Three guesses. If she had merely been talking on her cell phone, she would still have been looking at the road ahead. I'm betting that she was text-messaging at the time of the accident (like that train engineer in Los Angeles recently). Phone company records will tell the court for sure. If so, what should be her penalty for such blatantly negligent behavior that nearly killed a beautiful 3-year-old child?
Here's a personal look at the real human cost of texting while driving:
Griffin before the accident
Here's our beautiful baby the day after 4 hours of surgery to repair multiple skill fractures. He would surely have died or been severely disabled had they not been minutes away (by StarFlight helicopter) from Austin's world-class children's Dell Children's Medical Center and neurosurgeon Dr. Timothy George.
Day 4 - watching a movie on his Dad's iPhone.
The swelling of his head will go away, but that scar from ear-to-ear will be with him forever.
Feeling better. Mmmmm - mac-n-cheese. :-)
Day 5 - feeling much better. My granddad bought me my very own iPod and loaded it with movies. Life is good.
This morning.
All my tubes are finally out, and I'm going home today!
Note how much the swelling has improved in just three days.
It's almost unbelievable that's been only five days since the accident that nearly claimed his life.
All the medical experts involved expect him to make a full recovery.
Pretty soon he'll be all healed up and back to normal - thank the Lord!
In only six weeks he'll be allowed to be just as active as any other 3-year-old.
Hopefully before long the Texas Legislature will follow the lead of other states to mandate the use of a hands-free headset for cell phones while driving. This law will be relatively easy to enforce because drivers holding cell phones to their heads are easy to spot.
However, the issue of texting while driving is much more difficult to enforce because it's easy to text while holding the cell phone low and out of sight. It seems that the only way to prevent future tragedies like ours is for the penalties for 'InTEXTicated Driving' to be so certain and so severe that people will be deterred from doing it.
Phone company records of text messages are irrefutable and accurate to the second; so it would be an easy matter to prove in court that a person was texting at the time of an accident. As with drunken driving, a jail sentence (no matter the driver's age) should be mandatory whenever anyone is injured by an InTEXTicated driver. Wide media coverage of the first few convictions under such a law would almost surely deter most people from text-messaging until their car is stopped.
We encourage you to forward this email to all your friends and especially to
any legislator you know. We must try to stop 'Driving While InTEXTicated' before more innocent people are maimed or killed.
We thank all of you for your support through this terrible ordeal.

I cannot understand why people can't fathom why texting while driving is more dangerous than driving drunk. One requires to take one or both hands off the wheel and concentrate on hitting buttons smaller than a kernel of corn and the other you don't.
To add insult to injury these same morons are creating Facebook groups called "I text while I drive and I still haven't crashed! They are procreating folks. We're ****ed.

I hate texting when I'm driving. I can barely even text and walk simultaneously. Talking on the phone and driving is also something I try to avoid, I know too many people who have wrecked bc they've been on the phone/texting, it's freakin' ridiculous.
I've got an invention that would cut down on accidents related to playing with media devices while driving, but its my fortune to make, not OTs so I will keep it to myself.
My ex texts and drives. I called her a stupid **** because of it. She felt the need to text me when turning onto my street to tell me she was there. I don't know why she just couldn't ring the damn doorbell. My mom saw her once then said that I must text and drive too. I convinced her otherwise by explaining that I only have 2 hands. 1 for the wheel and 1 to shift.
