They might work, but it would take a bigass cam to get enough pressure on the injectors. The Common Rail with Piezo Injectors is the way to go, 36000 psi fuel pressure with up to 7 injector firings per cycle hell yeah.

edit, how about dropping a Series 50 into an F150 or 250, sure it will shake itself to pieces but 1200 ft/lb of torque from an I4 stock isn't bad. Thats if you can keep the pistons from shattering the cylinder walls (which they do ALOT).

it's a matter of weight. the 50 is around 2800lbs (iirc) so it would be too much for any light duty truck to take. you could probably fit it in a medium duty truck (Kodiak/Topkick, F550 up) and not have too much of a problem with the weight. that's actually a swap i want to try. and they don't shake THAT much (at least when the balancing shafts are correctly timed). also, just install thicker cylinder lines and slightly smaller pistons to stop the shattering problem (would the cylinder wall problem be common with the 60 Series too, considering they are the same liners and pistons, just two more on the 60??)

When I worked at W.W.Williams, the only 50s we saw were in CCT buses, and they were in the shop all the time. It is a horrible engine design, they simply took a Series 60, cut 2 cylinders off and threw a pair of balancer shafts under it, and thats it. The shafts aren't nearly heavy enough to compensate for the 4 gigantic pistons getting thrown around. Self destruction on the 60 doesn't happen because the 6 pistons balance each other out really well, but the 50 would throw them straight through the liners. Detroit should have just taken the 60 and made it smaller overall, not just cut the rear 1/3 of it off and do nothing else to it. It really does feel like a I6 that is missing 2 pistons when it is running. Now it would still be cool to put into a smaller truck, they actually only weigh about 2200 pounds, so a 250 or 350 could handle it if properly braced. And it wouldn't be hard to get 2000 ft/lbs of torque out of it with a little reprogramming.

i've yet to see a ISB swap in a Ranger. i've seen plenty of 4BT swaps, but never an ISB. that engine is just a little too long for the Ranger.

the swap i'd LOVE to see though would be a 12v71 Detroit in a pickup
