I've had my fair share of "immigration business" as well. A store that used to be Mailboxes Etc., well after they transformed into a UPS Store it went down the toilet. A nice local family was kicked out and replaced by what I assume was Indian, Malaysian or Pakistani people.
Out of nowhere ridiculous surcharges were being tacked on. "Distance Surcharge" because of where I lived, not the package receiver. Because my town was 15 miles from the interstate they justified adding $3-4 to each order. "Fuel Surcharge", and this was before the huge gas crisis when gas was still cheap! There's another $1.50 surcharge, that jumped to $3 after the gas crisis.
And the straw that broke the camels back...I packaged an item myself to try and save a few bucks, all it needs is a single strip of tape across the top to seal the box. I take it in, they put tape on it and give me the bill.....They charged me $3 for a SINGLE PIECE OF TAPE. The charge read, "UPS Store packaging," I looked at her and said, "Are you kidding me? $3 because you put tape on it?" She replied, "Well, anytime we handle boxes, we have to add a surcharge." After glaring at her for a few seconds I walked out the door while biting my tongue.
