Default Have you ever taught someone to drive a stick on your Mustang?

I've always said that my fiance would be the only one I'd teach on my car
(4 and a half years later, never tried.. lol)

But yesterday I was bored *and had a margarita in my system* and decided I'd give my brother (17) a quick lesson on our road.

Showed him that if the car is out of gear, you let out the clutch and it dies.
Then showed him how if you let the clutch out slow it'll inch forward.
Pushing the clutch back in stops that.
Then showed him how to put it in gear.
Had him hold the rpms to 1500-2K.
Had him let clutch out slow.

A few dry runs, and then finally putting it all together he completed 5 consecutive launches with VERY minimal whip lash, and 0 stalls.

He needs work on shifting to 2nd though lol..we never broke 25 mph.

I'm EXTREMELY pleased withmy teaching methods. The fiance is going to learn this weekend.

Yep. And it was the biggest failure of my entire marriage.

I made the mistake of trying to teach my wife to drive a stick with a '65 Mustang, 6 cylinder that had an old piece of schit Dagenham 4 speed tranny. The clutch was kind of grabby, the shifter was shot and needed a rebuild and the transmission was toast too. She stalled it out a couple times in the middle of traffic and that was it.

To this day when I hint that I want to get a family car with a standard tranny it still goes over like a fart in church.

i would let a few people drive my car, period....so no teaching to be done in there. i'd rather teach someone how to drive a stick in an economy car.

I have taught a couple of people. I do not mind. I have a nice new clutch and they cannot do to much damage to it at 5-10 mph... lol

If I were to teach someone, it would be on their car not mine.

i was just very surprised at how well it went...he never killed it, and the worst thing that happened was him letting the clutch out too quickly into 2nd and getting a rough shift...of course. he also missed 2nd once, and 3rd once as well.. lol

when i tried learning on my dads cavalier before i got my actual liscence I failed MISERABLY>>>> it was ugly, anger, clutch smell, lurching, whip lash, frustration.. etc...

and my brothers not one I expected to catch on.. i think the method i used was far more successful

1. show them engagement point
2. hold rpms
3. slowly slip clutch

my method > balance the clutch and gas and give and go.....
