Unless you are expecting some fish babies, I don't unstand why you would want a "brush pile" in your tank. I'm trying to visualize it done tastefully, but I can't..

heres my tank

+1 Boiling water then dechlorinated water until the water it's soaking in stays "clean" Dechlorinated is very important because the wood will absorb whatever chemicals are in the water and then leech it into the tank water thus killing your fish.

I've done that method for putting sea shells into a fresh water aquarium as well. Only difference was I put them in a bleach bath for about 15 minutes, then boiled, then soaked.

Marine shells into a FW aquarium is a bad idea, as the Calcium and lime are pulled into solution and raise pH.

As for this wood decore topic, use old dry wood to start with, soaking it long term removes tanins. Make sure to change the water it's soaking in so you pull out as much as possible. You'll still see some residual, but it won't be nearly as bad. Boiling takes care of possible parasites or other contamination.

Make sure the creek isn't being fed from a treated or polluted pond/lake in your area.

Have you looked on E-bay for driftwood packages?

BTW, switch to saltwater. So much more rewarding.
