I'm looking to spend somewhere between 400-500 bucks and I'm looking for something quick a simple. I know the home theater buffs are going to come in here and tell me how all of this stuff is going to sound like crap... but I don't really have that fine tuned of an ear and I'm just looking for something that doesn't sound like garbage and will give me some more sound than the TV speakers do now.
I have been looking at systems with Blu-ray players integrated into them... but I'm not heart set on it.
Here are a few examples of what I've been looking at so far. So if anyone knows anything about these or have any better suggestions, I'm all ears.
^ those are the best speakers for under $1000 you'll find anywhere.. you are limited to optical and digital coax audio input (or whatever those headphone style plugs are called)
take the left over $150 and buy a good stand alone blu-ray player.. or try to get a PS3 if you can
I currently have my Logitech Z-5500 plugged into my PS3, media center PC, and DVR... works well for me, I played it for my buddy who is really into home theatre, worked for quite awhile at a home theater/sound store and he has an amazing setup, he thought they sounded top notch for under $1000.
He can still get some excellent deals on stuff so I'll probably be upgrading at some point but it will be a $2000+ system..

That seems nice but I was looking for something with HDMI and component cable inputs.
meh, you wont be able to hear the difference at your price level. and there are adapters for the component to the headphone sized audio jack, ive used them before with this same system. they were like $2 each at radioshack, you'll need 2
you really have to hear the sound from the speakers.. there is a reason why it's won so many awards and it's been out for a long time.. 5 years i think? and nobody comes close to competing with them in that price range.. that is also why they have such a high customer rating.. look at that 90% 5 egg rating from 1300 people.. find other speakers that get that kind of rating. See if you can find a store that has a demo of these speakers.. I found a circuit city in MO or some sort of store like that.. had a demo setup.. that sold me on the unit. then go listen to demos of those other < $500 systems and you'll realize just how muddy and unclear the audio is.. I think even the < $1500 bose systems sound like junk compared to it.
Both are in your price range. They have HDMI/Component/Composite inputs. No blu-ray player though. However hooking up whatever you want to them will be easy.
Well maybe this is a bone head question... but if everything I have now is plugged in with component and HDMI cables.. how would this work?
You will have to buy adapters to fit into the standard headphone jack, or buy a bunch of optical cables. Of course if some of your devices do not use optical for sound, you are stuck with the standard headphone jack.
what are you connecting from? a cable TV tuner? (mine has every possible type of audio output) dvd player? (most semi-decent dvd players in the past 7 years have optical out)
If i remember right Kast1376 knows a lot about home theater and probably can give you good advice and will only recommend good products.
The logitech I think is the only way to go cheap on home audio and keeping atleast 5.1 surround, but it also is getting dated, maybe they'll come up with an updated version that supports more audio.. it only has DTS, Dolby Digital, and something else.. so there are some draw backs besides just the lack of HDMI and component support. But also keep in mind, these are PC speakers most PCs don't have component output, but many are starting to come with HDMI..
I'd try listening to both if you can.. local best buy might have that yamah system setup.. it might be hard to find a place with a demo of the logitech z5500.. might have to call around.
