Oh yeah, and some ideas for cardio, and switching it up. I thought that the stationary bike, treadmill and elliptical would do great for me (mainly cause I had shin splints), but there really is nothing like actually runing in the streets.

I run 4 days a week (morning and night), and the other days I go into the gym in the morning to do intense ab work and cardio on one of the various toys there.
My runs in the morning are an interval setup type, running 10 min straight, followed by a 2-3 min walk, then run ect. while my night runs are all about endurance, as you will need in the Academy.
As for the toys in the gym, I normally start with 5 sets of ab work (light weight 50-100 reps every different workout), then do 10-15 min on the apparatus depending on which one, then another bunch of ab, then cardio, ect.

If you have any more questions, feel free to PM me

That statement is SO true! Before I learned about weight loss and working out I thought since I was getting a "great" workout on a bike or elliptical I could translate that into long runs outside. I was wrong! Running outside is a great, great workout and works your body much more, but then strains your body more at the same time.

Diet is the most important part of weight loss, then cardio, then weight lifting. Without a good diet, doing cardio and weight lifting will be pointless or just cancel out the crap you ate that day. I would try to stay in between 1500-2000 calories a day and by eating 5-6 small meals a day, it will help you around holidays as your stomach will get smaller when eating small meals.

Grant, that is very encouraging, thank you. Yes, when I lift I typically will do either 8-10 rep max, pyramid, and one rep. I have a subscription to M&F, but so much of that is geared toward guys that are either not struggling with weight (i.e. their 3-4k cal diets) or are already jacked. But I get a lot of lifting information from them. But you offered some good pointers. I want to be around 220 when all is said and done. I have a big frame so that whole, you need to be 180 isn't realistic.

And I might have to move to the street because I can do 1hr on an elliptical no problem, but then I have to chase my brother around or play a game, I am winded, so I can attest to the whole the street is nothing like a machine.

I plan on a diet of about 2000 calories, I follow the WW plan, because that is where I had my best success. I lost 10lbs just on diet alone, then when i did diet and exercise, I lost another 20 over 4 months.

Which brings up my next question, which do you feel is more effective at fat loss, not just weight loss, weight training or cardio?
They both have their ups and downs. That honestly sounds like too much cardio for my taste, but, what ever.

Just eat leaner and get active, lift 3-4 days a week and do cardio on the off days. TIME TO GET JACKED, and ****.

Uhh, lifting burns a fair amount of calories, and the muscle you build by lifting burns extra calories 24/7.

I've gained 30 pounds so far this year and dropped my mile time from 12:35 to 8:55...

Eat less, and eat better quality food

Absolutely, and youre preaching to the choir here, bro. When I walk into interviews, they look at me and go "wait.. youre not hired yet?" Since my shoulders are twice as wide as any other applicants haha. 220 is my goal as well, and I really dont think I could go much lower without losing a lot of strength (which will happen in the academy).
